The level of biodiversity within a woodland is directly tied to its structural and developmental complexity. A uniform, single-species plantation generally supports limited wildlife, whereas an uneven-aged forest with a diverse species composition, variable canopy layers, sunny glades, and abundant standing and fallen deadwood offers a massive variety of specialised ecological niches. Each structural layer supports specific communities; the high canopy hosts nesting birds and specialised insects, the bark and hollows provide shelter for bats and owls, the forest floor supports shade-tolerant wildflowers and ground beetles, and the complex soil web drives nutrient recycling.
