Veteran trees are individual specimens that have reached a mature, ancient, or advanced stage of their biological life cycle, exhibiting distinct structural and ecological characteristics that set them apart from younger forest trees. These trees are often defined not strictly by chronological age, but by the presence of vital microhabitats and decay features, such as completely hollow trunks, large pockets of standing deadwood in the canopy, peeling bark, sap runs, and complex wood-decay fungi.

Far from being dying or useless structures, veteran trees are irreplaceable ecological biological hotspots that anchor forest ecosystems. They host hundreds of highly specialised species, including rare saproxylic (wood-boring) beetles, unique lichens, bryophytes, and cavity-nesting birds or roosting bats that cannot survive in younger, uniform woodlands.

The management of veteran trees requires careful conservation strategies focused on preserving their structural integrity, managing surrounding competition for light through halo-thinning, and protecting their extensive root systems from soil compaction, ensuring these ancient organisms can continue to provide ecological continuity for centuries to come.
