Urban forestry is the specialised branch of forest management focused on the planning, establishment, protection, and maintenance of individual trees, street avenues, parklands, and small woodland patches within urban and suburban environments.
Managing trees within a built landscape presents unique challenges, including severe soil compaction, restricted rooting space, physical infrastructure conflicts, air pollution, and altered microclimates. Despite these stresses, urban trees provide profound ecological, economic, and social benefits, often categorised as vital ecosystem services. They play a massive role in mitigating the urban heat island effect by shading concrete surfaces and cooling the air through evapotranspiration.
Urban canopies act as natural air filters, trapping harmful particulate matter and absorbing gaseous pollutants, while their root systems absorb stormwater runoff, significantly reducing localised flooding. From a social perspective, access to green, tree-lined urban spaces drastically reduces human stress, improves mental health, and encourages physical activity, making urban forestry a core pillar of modern sustainable city planning and public health initiatives.
Urban forestry management is often conducted by arboriculturists given the single, scattered or low density of trees in urban forests. The are exceptions of course, such as the large forests in London like Richmond, Hainault and Epping, which aer managed by teams of foresters.
