Tree phenology is the scientific study of the timing of recurring natural biological phases and events in a tree's life cycle—such as the exact dates of spring leaf budburst, flowering, fruit ripening, autumn colour changes, and winter leaf drop—and how these phases are directly influenced by seasonal and interannual climate variations.

Trees are highly sensitive environmental barometers; they track subtle cues in their environment, combining internal biological clocks with external factors like changing day lengths (photoperiod), cumulative winter chilling hours, and rising spring temperatures to precisely time their developmental transitions.

Monitoring tree phenology has become a cornerstone of modern climate change research. As global temperatures rise, long-term phenological records demonstrate that spring budburst is occurring significantly earlier in the year, while autumn dormancy is being delayed, effectively lengthening the overall growing season. However, these shifting timelines carry substantial risks, including exposing tender new leaves to damaging late spring frosts, disrupting synchronised relationships with emerging insect pollinators, and altering the delicate balance of forest food webs.

Phenology also has significant economic implications. For example, whether orchard fruit trees are suited to avoid spring frosts, and the timing of 'leaf peeping' tourism in North America.
