Tree pests and pathogens encompass the diverse array of insects, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and phytoplasmas that cause physical damage, physiological stress, structural weakness, or widespread mortality within tree populations.

In a natural, balanced forest ecosystem, pests and pathogens act as standard evolutionary drivers, weeding out weakened individuals, creating deadwood habitats, and opening gaps in the canopy to stimulate natural regeneration. However, the modern globalisation of trade and the impacts of climate change have severely disrupted this natural balance.

Exotic pests and fungal pathogens are frequently introduced to new continents where native trees possess no natural evolutionary immunity, leading to catastrophic landscape transformations. Historic examples like Dutch elm disease and contemporary crises like ash dieback and the spread of Phytophthora root rot demonstrate how a single introduced pathogen can devastate an entire tree genus across an entire continent.

Introduced mammals such as grey squirrel and muntjac deer can also lead to significant tree health issues and environmental degradation. Managing these threats requires a heavy focus on strict international biosecurity protocols, rapid containment of outbreaks, and silvicultural strategies centered on species diversification, as multi-species woodlands are significantly less vulnerable to catastrophic, single-species pest wipeouts.
