Tree identification does not ground to a halt when deciduous canopies drop their leaves in autumn; instead, the focus shifts to the highly detailed architecture of twigs and winter buds.
During the summer growing season, trees actively prepare for the following spring by packing miniature versions of next year's leaves and flowers into tightly sealed, protective packages known as buds. Covered in tough, overlapping, waterproof scales to lock out frost and pests, these dormant structures exhibit highly distinct, species-specific profiles.
