Tree Anatomy: Roots

The underground network responsible for anchoring a tree, absorbing water and nutrients, and storing energy reserves.

The root system of a tree is a highly complex, underground network responsible for three primary biological functions: mechanical anchoring, water and nutrient absorption, and energy storage.

Structurally, the system consists of large, woody lateral roots that radiate outwards from the base of the trunk to steady the immense weight of the tree against powerful wind throw forces. Branching off from these structural stabilisers are smaller transport roots and a vast, dense network of microscopic fine roots concentrated in the upper layers of the soil where oxygen and nutrients are most abundant. These fine roots are covered in tiny root hairs that interact intimately with soil biology and mycorrhizal fungi to draw moisture and dissolved minerals up into the tree. Additionally, roots act as vital metabolic storehouses, packed with starches and sugars during the autumn dormancy to fuel the rapid explosion of new leaf growth in the following spring.

The health of a tree is entirely dependent on its root zone; soil compaction, waterlogging, or physical root severed during construction can rapidly destabilise a tree and lead to canopy decline or total structural collapse.
