Timber: Seasoning and Drying

The process of reducing the moisture content of green wood to improve its stability, strength, and structural performance.

Timber seasoning and drying is the critical technological process of systematically reducing the moisture content of freshly harvested 'green' wood to prepare it for practical structural construction, furniture making, or woodcrafts. Living trees contain an immense volume of water.

Seasoning is achieved through two primary methods. Air drying relies on natural airflow under a protective roof to slowly evaporate water over months or years, though it rarely reduces moisture levels below fourteen percent due to ambient outdoor humidity. In contrast, kiln drying places the wood inside a regulated chamber where heat, humidity, and airflow are mechanically controlled. Kiln drying accelerates the process to mere days and can precisely achieve those single-digit moisture levels required for heated indoor environments. Operators must carefully manage either process because drying wood too rapidly causes the outer layers to shrink faster than the wet core, resulting in severe defects like surface cracking and internal structural stress.

Moisture content (MC) typically drops as follows across the three main stages of timber processing:

Unseasoned (Green) Timber: 40% to 100%+ MC


When a tree is first cut down, it is saturated with water. The moisture content is regularly over 50%, and for certain softwoods or sapwood, the water can actually weigh more than the wood itself, pushing the moisture level past 100%.

Air-Dried Timber: 12% to 18% MC


When left to dry naturally outdoors, the wood can only get as dry as the surrounding air allows (known as Equilibrium Moisture Content). In most temperate climates, natural air circulation will bring the timber down to a floor of around 12% to 15%. This level is perfectly adequate for outdoor construction, framing, and fencing.

Kiln-Dried Timber: 6% to 10% MC


Because modern indoor environments use heating and air conditioning, indoor air is much drier than outdoor air. To prevent wood from warping inside a home, it must be baked in a kiln to reach these single-digit moisture levels. This range is the standard for indoor furniture, cabinetry, and hardwood flooring.
