Timber: Figure and Grain

Grain refers to the physical, structural alignment and orientation of wood fibres relative to the trunk axis, whereas figure defines the purely visual pattern or ornamental appearance seen on a wood surface.

In wood technology and forestry, the terms 'figure' and 'grain' are frequently conflated, yet they describe completely distinct wood characteristics.

Grain refers strictly to the structural, spatial orientation of the longitudinal wood fibres (tracheids and vessels) relative to the main axis of the tree stem. It dictates the physical properties of the timber, including structural strength, splitting characteristics, and stability during seasoning. Grain types are defined mechanically, such as straight, spiral, interlocked, or wavy grain.

Figure describes the purely visual, ornamental design or optical pattern displayed on a cut surface of wood. While figure is ultimately a byproduct of how the internal grain anatomy, annual growth rings, and medullary rays intersect a cutting plane, it is heavily amplified by light reflection and variations in wood density. Spectacular figures—such as fiddleback, bird's-eye, quilted, or crotch patterns—are prized anomalies rather than standard structural configurations. For instance, a log might possess a highly irregular, wavy 'grain' structurally, which, when sliced at a specific geometric angle, yields a beautifully rippled 'figure' highly sought after by luthiers and fine cabinetmakers.

Understanding this distinction is vital for foresters and woodworkers alike: grain determines how a piece of timber will physically behave, machine, and bear structural loads, while figure dictates its aesthetic and commercial luxury value. Misusing these terms obscures the fundamental relationship between a tree's physical biological growth forms and the decorative surfaces derived from its heartwood.
