Unlike shelterwood systems that eventually remove the parent trees to create a new even-aged block, selection forestry maintains a permanently uneven-aged, multi-layered forest matrix indefinitely. Harvesting interventions do not clear specific areas; instead, foresters carefully select individual mature trees or small clusters of stems for felling across the entire woodland every few years. This precise removal mimics the natural, small-scale canopy gaps created by windthrow or old-age mortality. The resulting gaps admit small pockets of sunlight to the forest floor, which stimulates a continuous wave of natural regeneration while the rest of the woodland remains under deep canopy shade.
Managing a selection forest requires a high level of silvicultural skill and frequent forest inventories, as foresters must ensure a continuous, balanced ratio of saplings, pole-stage trees, and massive mature timber crop trees across every single hectare. By avoiding large-scale felling completely, selection silviculture optimizes structural biodiversity, protects delicate forest soils from nutrient leaching, and creates an exceptionally stable ecosystem that is highly resilient against windthrow, pest infestations, and climate fluctuations.
