Trees have evolved distinct methods tailored to their specific ecological niches. Wind dispersal (anemochory) utilises lightweight seeds equipped with specialised wings or downy hairs, allowing them to catch air currents and glide significant distances across open ground. Water dispersal (hydrochory) relies on buoyant, water-resistant seeds or fruits designed to float along rivers, streams, or floodplains to colonise damp banks.
Animal dispersal (zoochory) is highly sophisticated and can be active or passive; some trees produce heavy, nutritious nuts that are collected and buried as winter food reserves by rodents and birds, many of which are forgotten and germinate. Others produce fleshy, colourful fruits designed to be eaten by animals, with the seeds passing safely through the digestive tract to be deposited elsewhere in a rich package of natural fertiliser.
