Nurse cropping

The silvicultural practice of interplanting fast-growing, hardy temporary tree species alongside or underneath slower-growing, highly valuable crop trees to provide microclimatic protection, nitrogen fixation, and soil improvement during early establishment.

Nurse cropping is a sophisticated companion-planting strategy designed to mimic the natural ecological succession of woodlands to ensure successful tree establishment. When planting high-value but vulnerable climax species like Oak (Quercus robur) or Beech (Fagus sylvatica), foresters often interplant them with fast-growing, pioneer 'nurse' trees such European Larch (Larix decidua) or Birch (Betula pendula). Other high value hardwood-producing species like Common Walnut (Juglans regia) and Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) also benefit from nurse species, including Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) Spreading Oleaster (Elaeagnus umbellata).

The nurse species grow rapidly, establishing a protective canopy that buffers tender crop seedlings from severe spring frosts, drying winds, and intense direct sunlight. Additionally, species like alder physically improve the site by fixing atmospheric nitrogen into the soil through symbiotic root nodules, significantly accelerating nutrient cycling.

As the canopy closes, the dense shade cast by the nurse crops naturally suppresses aggressive weeds and forces the target crop trees to shoot upward rapidly, resulting in straight, clean, branch-free trunks (therefore free of knots).

Once the primary crop trees are securely established and require more space and light, the nurse trees are systematically removed during early forest thinning operations.
