Invasive Tree Species

Non-native tree species that spread rapidly outside their natural range, disrupting local ecosystems and outcompeting native flora.

Invasive tree species are non-native, introduced woody plants that adapt aggressively to their new environments, spreading rapidly outside of intentional cultivation and causing severe ecological, economic, or environmental harm to local ecosystems. While many non-native trees are highly valued in forestry for their rapid timber production, certain species possess biological traits—such as prolific, wind-dispersed seed production, rapid juvenile growth rates, extreme tolerance to poor soils, and a complete lack of local pests or herbivores—that allow them to outcompete native flora completely.

Once established, invasive trees can rapidly transform complex, multi-layered native woodlands into dense, uniform monocultures. They shade out native understory wildflowers, disrupt long-established mycorrhizal networks, alter local soil chemistry through the drop of toxic or slow-decaying leaf litter, and significantly simplify the local food web, as local insects and birds are rarely adapted to utilise them for food or shelter.

Managing invasive trees is incredibly difficult and expensive, requiring intensive mechanical cutting, stump herbicide applications, and long-term monitoring to allow native habitats to recover.

Tree species can be invasive where introduced, but non-invasive in other places (often where native). Invasive 'behaviour' is affected by climate, soils, moisture, pests and pathogens, and other environmental factors.
