Young trees are highly vulnerable to losing their terminal leaders or developing competing structural forms due to a variety of environmental stressors, including wind, frost, bird perching, browsing mammals, and even the physical confines of tree shelters. Formative pruning systematically addresses these vulnerabilities by favouring a single leader, eliminating multiple co-dominant leaders, and removing steeply ascending or abnormally large branches.
A key management principle is to intervene early and often—ideally when branches do not exceed two centimetres in diameter—enabling clean cuts that can be executed easily using basic bypass secateurs. Pruning is optimally carried out in late spring just before budburst, when the lack of foliage makes the crown architecture highly visible and the tree's active sap flow promotes rapid occlusion. By maintaining a rule of thumb to prune branches before they reach the thickness of a thumb, and always retaining a functional live crown across the top third of the tree, foresters prevent the formation of massive internal knots.
