Forest thinning is a routine and critical silvicultural intervention that involves the selective removal of a percentage of trees within a developing forest stand to optimise the growth, health, and quality of the remaining individuals.
When a forest is young, trees are grown closely together to encourage them to shoot upwards rapidly and form clean, straight trunks free of heavy lower branches. However, as they mature, the trees begin to compete intensely with one another for limited resources, including canopy sunlight, soil moisture, and ground nutrients. Left unthinned, the stand becomes stagnant, resulting in tall, spindly trees with weak root systems that are highly susceptible to windthrow and disease. Through systematic or selective thinning, foresters remove poorly formed, diseased, or suppressed trees, effectively reallocation the site's growing potential to the strongest, straightest, and healthiest 'crop trees'. Thinning opens up the canopy to let light reach the forest floor, helping life on the forest floor to thrive.
