Forest biosecurity is a comprehensive framework of strategic measures, policy regulations, and management protocols designed to protect woodland ecosystems, commercial plantations, and urban trees from the introduction, establishment, and spread of harmful non-native pests, virulent diseases, and invasive alien organisms.

In our highly interconnected global economy, the international movement of timber, wood packaging materials, and live nursery plants has created unprecedented pathways for exotic pathogens to cross natural geographic barriers. When a foreign pest or fungus enters a new ecosystem, it often encounters native tree species with zero evolutionary resistance, leading to rapid, catastrophic tree mortality and irreversible landscape devastation.

Modern forest biosecurity focuses heavily on preventative strategies, including strict international quarantine inspections at shipping ports, wood heat-treatment standards, real-time pheromone trapping networks, and rapid eradication protocols for localised outbreaks. On a local management level, reinforcing biosecurity involves moving away from vulnerable monocultures toward mixed-species forestry to ensure that if a specific pathogen breaks through defences, the entire forest ecosystem will not collapse.
