The strategic monitoring, population control, and physical exclusion of deer species within a forest to mitigate browsing damage and protect natural tree regeneration and biodiversity.

Deer management is an absolutely crucial component of modern silviculture, particularly across the British Isles where the absence of natural apex predators has allowed wild deer populations to reach historically unprecedented levels.

High densities of deer species such as Roe, Fallow, and Muntjac impose immense biotic pressure on forest dynamics by systematically browsing young trees and stripping bark. This intense herbivory halts natural regeneration by consuming vulnerable seedlings, decimates understorey floral biodiversity, and ruins timber quality by destroying terminal leaders. Male deer (stags) mark their territories and clean the velvet off their newly-grown antlers by rubbing them on
young trees which is known as 'fraying'. Some tree species are more attractive to browsing deer than others, especially: Wild Cherry, Hazel, Rowan among many broadleaves, and conifers including Norway Spruce, Japanese Red Cedar and Coast Redwood.

To establish new woodlands or manage existing ones under continuous cover regimes, foresters must implement comprehensive management strategies. Physical exclusion using high-tensile deer fencing or individual plastic tree shelters is common for early-stage crop protection, but these mechanical barriers are expensive and require high maintenance. Consequently, sustainable forestry relies heavily on active landscape-scale population control through humane culling carried out by trained stalkers.

By maintaining deer populations at a level that balances the carrying capacity of the land with the structural resilience of the vegetation, foresters ensure that broadleaved and coniferous saplings can successfully recruit into the upper canopy, securing both economic timber returns and diverse ecosystem habitats.
