Deadwood ecology is the study of decaying wood within a forest ecosystem and its critical, irreplaceable role in supporting biodiversity, carbon storage, and nutrient cycling. Historically viewed in 'tidy' forestry practices as a sign of neglect or a potential fire hazard, dead and dying wood is now recognised as a cornerstone of a healthy, functioning forest.

Deadwood occurs in several forms, including standing dead trees (snags), large fallen logs, rotting stumps, and dead branches high in the living canopy. Each form creates a unique microhabitat that shifts as decomposition progresses over decades. Deadwood supports thousands of saproxylic organisms—species that are entirely dependent on dead wood at some stage of their life cycle—including specialised fungi, wood-boring beetles, woodlice, and hoverfly larvae. These organisms initiate the breakdown of tough lignin and cellulose, slowly releasing locked nutrients back into the forest floor. Additionally, fallen logs act as natural forest sponges, retaining immense quantities of moisture during droughts, providing ideal, moss-covered nursery beds for emerging tree seedlings, and offering vital shelter for amphibians, small mammals, and ground-nesting birds.
