Coppicing is an ancient and traditional method of woodland management based on the natural ability of many broadleaved tree species to sprout vigorous new shoots from a cut stump, known as a stool.
When a tree is cut down to near ground level during its winter dormancy, the existing, extensive root system pumps stored energy into a flush of rapid vertical growth in the spring. This harvesting cycle is repeated at regular intervals, typically ranging from 7 to 20 years depending on the species and the intended end use of the timber.
Coppicing creates a sustainable, renewable supply of small-to-medium diameter wood products, including straight poles, hurdles, fencing rods, stakes, and firewood, without ever destroying the tree itself or clearing the entire forest ecosystem. Ecologically, a coppice woodland functions as a dynamic mosaic of light and shade; the periodic clearing of specific plots ('coupes') allows sunlight to hit the forest floor, stimulating a rich ground flora of wildflowers and creating temporary open habitats that are vital for butterflies, insects, and woodland birds.
