Coppice-with-Standards

Coppice-with-standards is a traditional, sophisticated two-tiered forest management system that balances short-term and long-term timber needs within a single woodland plot.

The system features a lower tier known as the understorey, which consists usually of broadleaved trees managed through regular, short-rotation coppicing to yield a continuous supply of small-diameter wood products like fencing rods, wattle poles, hurdle wood, and charcoal fuel every few years.

Towering above this coppice layer is an upper tier composed of 'standards'. These are individual single-stemmed trees nurtured from seedlings (or sometimes planted if more species diversification is an aim) that are left untouched during the coppice harvests allowing them to mature fully over multiple decades or centuries. These standard trees develop wide crowns.
