Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), often referred to as close-to-nature or permanent-canopy forestry, is a silvicultural approach that avoids the traditional practice of clear-felling large tracts of land. Instead, CCF focuses on maintaining a permanent forest canopy and utilising individual tree or small group selection systems to harvest timber. This method relies heavily on natural regeneration rather than artificial replanting, allowing young seedlings to establish themselves under the protective shade of parent trees.

By preserving a continuous canopy, CCF maintains a stable forest microclimate, reduces soil erosion, prevents nutrient leaching, and avoids the dramatic visual and ecological disruptions associated with large-scale clear-cutting. Structurally, CCF stands develop into uneven-aged, multi-layered ecosystems, which closely mimic natural old-growth forest dynamics. This structural complexity dramatically improves forest resilience against environmental shocks such as windthrow, pest outbreaks, and climate fluctuations, while providing continuous, high-quality habitat for a wide array of woodland wildlife, birds, and specialised forest fungi. cv.
