Charcoal making is a traditional and highly specialised forest industry that involves the incomplete combustion of wood under strictly controlled, low-oxygen conditions to produce a carbon-rich fuel.

Historically, charcoal was the primary energy source for early metallurgical industries, including iron smelting and blacksmithing, because it burns at a significantly higher temperature and with far less smoke than raw wood. Charcoal was also an essential ingredient used in the manufacture of gunpowder, with the wood of Black Alder particularly valued for this purpose. Biochar is a modern form of charcoal used as a soil amendment, improving water retention, reducing compaction, and nutrient absorption while sequestering carbon.

To make charcoal, woodcutters typically utilise small-diameter hardwood thinnings or coppice material, which is stacked into a dense mound (or earth kiln) or loaded into modern metal retorts. The wood is then ignited, and the air supply is carefully restricted; this drives off volatile moisture, tar, and gases without allowing the wood to burn completely away to ash. The resulting charcoal is a lightweight, porous material consisting almost entirely of pure carbon. This historic craft played a vital role in shaping woodland management for centuries, directly driving the expansion of intensive coppice systems, particularly in alder, birch, and oak woodlands, and remaining an essential component of traditional woodland heritage and sustainable local fuel production today.
