First documented by the young Scottish plant-hunter John Jeffrey (1826-unknown) in 1852 in the Shasta valley, California, while employed by the ‘Oregon Botanical Association’ to follow in the footsteps of the celebrated David Douglas.
Native along Pacific North America, through south-west Oregon, the Klamath and Sierra Nevada ranges of California (to 2,100m), south to Nevada and northern Mexico. It grows in mixed coniferous stands in Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. In Europe it is a relatively rare specimen in arboreta and private collections.
Monoecious. Cones mature over two years, only reaching one-fifth of final size in first year. Unlike most pine species, which are wind-dispersed, its heavy seeds are dispersed by mammals and birds, especially several squirrel species and chickadees.
A large pine, over 50m with a 120cm stem in its native range. Bark smells sweet, of vanilla or lemon; buds non-resinous. Needles in threes, 12-20cm. Cones very large, 15-30cm, with reflexed prickles. Ponderosa Pine is very similar but grows higher and drier, with smaller, pricklier cones, resinous buds and turpentine-scented bark.
Quite a slow-growing tree, capable of thriving on dry and nutrient-poor soils, allowing it to outcompete other tree species. Used in plantation forestry in North America. Sensitive to air pollution, especially ozone.
In natural range, nutcrackers feed on its seed, having the strength and coordination to prise apart the giant scales of its cones.
Most significant threat is from the Jeffrey Pine Beetle (Dendroctonus jeffreyi), which can devastate stands. Often hosts dwarf mistletoe, which can lead to tree death.
Timber is strong but quite soft, making it popular for construction in North America. Outsized foliage and cones makes this an attractive specimen tree for larger parks and gardens.
