I’m walking away from you. I never walk anywher I’m walking away from you. I never walk anywhere without you by my side. Now I’m running, running alone towards the forest we planted together on the hill all those years ago. The trees have closed to a thicket and I suddenly veer into them, following a narrow path that curves gently up the hill. I’m running so hard that I’m leaning forward, sharp as an arrow, my feet angled and pressing so hard they’re slipping inside the toe of each boot, yet I’m moving in slow motion like I’m running underwater. I keep checking the path ahead, as if I’m nervous of seeing anyone else, and when I pass a bend and see that the way ahead is clear, I dive to the side. I curl up on a carpet of leaves on the forest floor and fall asleep. When I wake, I’m curled up into a ball, and inside your master’s nest, you are curled up too, my arms wrapped around you. We are no longer apart.

I wake up, confused, you are lying next to me, your head on my arm. It’s 4am and we’re lying together by the woodburner of our living room, its orange glow silently licking the walls except the silhouette of our embrace. We’ve been together like this all through the night as I comfort you; holding your paws, rubbing your sides, stroking your soft beard. Your breaths are so shallow I wonder for a moment if you have already passed, but your life force is so strong you still linger awhile.

I know then you’ll always be by my side, and together we’ll love our walks, in this world and the next.
